After roughly 100 years, the portable sun umbrella is making a comeback with Sunbarry as a fashionable must-have.
Konstanz, 2026. After roughly a century in which a suntan was seen as a sign of vitality and tanning salons sprang up on every corner, attitudes are now shifting. UV protection is no longer a niche topic. In the beauty and skincare community in particular, applying SPF 50+ every day has long been considered good practice.
The popularity of sunbathing is a phenomenon largely confined to Europe and North America. In countries such as Australia, where skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, consistent sun protection has been taken for granted for decades and from earliest childhood.
Across much of Asia, fair skin has traditionally been regarded as an ideal of beauty, so sunscreens, special protective clothing and sun umbrellas are in everyday use. In Japan, for example, the sun umbrella is called higasa and has been part of daily life for around 2,000 years, for men and women alike.
Even though Germany has many cool, rainy days, the need for better sun protection is real: with more than 300,000 new cases each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in Germany, and UV radiation is considered the main cause. At the same time, summers are getting hotter, and cooling shade is becoming increasingly appealing compared with baking in full sun.
Sunbarry has set itself the goal of re-establishing the UV sun umbrella in Europe too: turning an underrated everyday object into a modern accessory that protects while elevating any outfit.
Behind Sunbarry is Marion Vogel, 37, mother and founder. After founding several companies already, Sunbarry is her most personal project. "First and foremost I created the umbrella for myself, and I hope it will spark a long-overdue trend."
Sunbarry is a lifestyle brand founded in 2026 with a focus on stylish everyday UV protection. The current range comprises UV sun umbrellas; further UV-protection products are in planning. All products are tested for harmful substances, certified UPF 50+ and available online at www.sunbarry.de.
